The Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority has issued a fresh warning of an impending flood in the Jigawa-Kano axis due to the overflow of the Chalawa and Tiga Dams.

According to the Managing Director of the authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, the dams have reached maximum capacity, posing a significant threat to communities downstream.

People and communities around the Hadejia River Basin should be advised to take precautionary measures, as the water will be released form Tiga and Chalawa Dams which will have consequences or negative effects on those communities around Ringim, Hadejia Auyo, Kafin Hausa, Kirikasamma, and Guri axis.

The warning comes on the heels of devastating floods in recent years that resulted in the loss of over 200 lives, destruction of homes, and damage to thousands of hectares of farmland, with estimated losses running into billions of Naira.

The authority has called on the state and federal governments to take necessary actions to mitigate the impact of the flood. The government is urged to provide support to affected communities and take proactive measures to prevent further damage.

“The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available” says the MD.
