The Jigawa State Government on Monday launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Emblem Appeal Fund, with millions of naira raised to support veterans, widows and families of fallen heroes.
The event, which took place at the Council Chamber, Government House, Dutse, was presided over by Governor Malam Umar Namadi, who described the occasion as a solemn moment to honour Nigerians who sacrificed their lives for the unity and peace of the country.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Namadi said the remembrance was not only symbolic but a call to action to support those left behind by fallen service personnel.
“Today is another important day where we remember our fellow heroes who dedicated their lives to serve this country. They are bona fide members of this nation who paid the ultimate price to keep Nigeria united and peaceful,” the governor said.
He added that the emblem appeal fund was meant to sustain the welfare of veterans and families of deceased service members.
“We are remembering them and donating to help sustain their lives and the lives of their families who are left behind. I feel this is very important,” he said.
Governor Namadi announced a donation of N10 million on behalf of himself and his family to support the appeal fund, while commending government officials, security agencies and individuals who contributed generously.
“I want to appreciate everyone who donated for the welfare of our heroes. We will continue to support you and ensure that the welfare of our people is taken care of,” the governor assured.
Several government officials and organisations donated to the fund, including local government chairmen, the ALGON chairman, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel and NUJ Jigawa State Council, the Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service, permanent secretaries, special assistants and senior special assistants.
Others includes Galadiman Dutse, Alhaji Nasiru Muhammad Sunusi, the Nigerian Army, Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Hisbah, vigilante groups, private companies and individuals, among them C.E.O Skylink Multimedia ltd. Ali Rabiu Ali, also made personal donations.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Armed Forces Remembrance Committee in the state, Aliyu Shehu (rtd), expressed profound gratitude to Governor Namadi for what he described as his fatherly concern and consistent humanitarian support.
“Words are not enough to appreciate Your Excellency’s kindness and intervention. With your total support, we were able to move the organisation forward and deliver welfare services to our veterans,” he said.
Aliyu Shehu appealed for continued government support, particularly in the areas of mobility, construction of a permanent office and establishment of a centralised service structure for veterans in the state.
“Your positive interventions during your leadership will leave a lasting legacy. We humbly request your continued support and understanding,” he added.
He assured the government that veterans and security formations in the state remained disciplined, loyal and committed to supporting the current administration in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The programme also featured prayers, inter-denominational activities and a schedule of humanitarian visits to families of fallen heroes.
