The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Operations Office, today coordinated the first batch of a Riverine Community Training Program organized by the Kano State Ministry of Transportation. The training targeted canoe operators across 19 riverine Local Government Areas in response to the rising number of boat mishaps in the country.

In collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), participants were trained on water transport safety, first aid for drowning victims, proper use of life jackets, and emergency response techniques.

As part of the initiative, the Kano State Government will distribute life jackets to canoe operators and communities to enhance water safety and reduce fatalities.

The event was attended by the Honorable Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs (supervising the Ministry of Transportation), Executive Secretary of Kano SEMA, Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi, and Dr. Nura Ibrahim Hassan, Technical Assistant to the Ministry.
