The Jigawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held its maiden Congress meeting on August 20, 2025, at the NUJ Secretariat in Dutse.
The meeting provided a platform for reviewing the state of the Union and its members, as well as addressing key issues impacting journalists and their welfare.
This is contained in a communique’ signed by Comrade Isma’il Ibrahim Dutse (Chairman), Comrade Aisha Ahmed (Secretary). And also Communiqué Drafting Committee: Alhassan Aliyu Muhammad (Chairman),
Sabiu Abubakar Garba (Secretary), Yakubu Iliya (Member)and Abdullahi Yakubu (Member) and made available to newsmen on Friday 22nd August, 2025.
The Congress expressed confidence in the leadership of Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, recognizing the council’s achievements. The meeting also acknowledged Engineer Sirajo Sabo’s renovation of the dilapidated Secretariat and recommended him for an NUJ award.
The Congress resolved to conduct regular meetings as mandated by the NUJ Constitution and approved the establishment of an online media platform owned by the Union to foster sustainable revenue streams. The meeting also gave the Council the go-ahead to conduct a membership revalidation exercise.
The Congress commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for his visionary infrastructural projects, including roads, bridges, and drainage systems. The meeting also applauded the Jigawa State Government for providing subsidized fertilizer to farmers.
The Congress called on the Jigawa State Ministry of Higher Education to accelerate efforts in securing accreditation for the Mass Communication Diploma programme at Jigawa State Polytechnic. The meeting also urged further recruitment for the Information and Public Relations Cadre, Jigawa State Broadcasting Corporation, and State-owned Television.
The Congress voiced concern over the neglect of Community FM Stations and called for renovations and modern equipment to enhance information dissemination about government policies and programs.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing training and welfare enhancement of its members and advocated for press freedom. The meeting urged members to adhere to journalism ethics in their professional undertakings.
The maiden Congress meeting marked a significant milestone in the history of the NUJ Jigawa Council, demonstrating the Union’s commitment to promoting the interests of its members and the journalism profession in the state.
