Jigawa State has flagged off its 2026 Hajj operations with the successful airlift of its first batch of 480 intending pilgrims, amid assurances of improved welfare, stricter compliance, and enhanced coordination.
The pilgrims departed from Nuhu Muhammadu Sunusi International Airport to Madinah, Saudi Arabia, marking the beginning of this year’s spiritual journey for thousands from the state.
Director-General of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Ahmed Umar Labbo, said the exercise reflects months of planning aimed at ensuring a hitch-free Hajj.
He noted that the pilgrims, drawn from 25 local government areas, went through comprehensive screening and orientation designed to prepare them for the religious obligations and international travel requirements.
Labbo stressed that the government had strengthened pre-departure sensitisation by involving key federal enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police, NDLEA, Immigration, and Customs, to educate pilgrims on safety, conduct, and prohibited items.
“This is part of our effort to avoid infractions and ensure that our pilgrims represent Jigawa and Nigeria responsibly,” he said.
He added that officials of the pilgrims board, medical personnel, and other support staff accompanied the contingent to guarantee proper care and emergency response throughout the exercise.
The DG also highlighted improved logistics and welfare arrangements put in place in Saudi Arabia, assuring that accommodation, healthcare, and general support services have been adequately secured.
While commending security agencies for the orderly screening process, Labbo urged the pilgrims to uphold discipline and act as worthy ambassadors of their state and country.
Some of the intending pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the level of organisation at the Hajj camp and airport, describing the process as smooth and well-coordinated.
The airlift was conducted by Umza Airline, with subsequent batche expected to follow in the coming next day.
